If you own a business you need to save money and cut costs. But there is a point of diminishing returns.
If you are intent on screwing your staff out of $40 your business might be destine for failure.
Here is the story in a nutshell. ‘Cause I like putting things in nutshells.
Tuesday I get an email, can I cover some wedding photography as the owner of the business was going to do this assignment but he is doing another wedding and they overlap.
Sure, I can do that. Friday, drive from FoCo to Lafayette, gas money, my time, miss First Friday Art Walk. But hey, I’m up for helping out.
Shoot events before the wedding. Fun time. Bride and groom are wonderful and fun. Owner arrives just in time for the ceremony, we all shoot ceremony, then he tells me I can leave. Which is good as I can go home, bad in that I miss the food. We get food as part of the deal.
Then he says – after it’s all done, no mention of this when offering me the assignment – that I’m not going to get paid my full rate.
What? The? Fuck?
And my full rate is not as much as you think it is. We are literally talking about $40 dollars here.
I give up First Friday, drive 90 miles round trip, don’t get food, on short notice – and this fuckwad feels the need to screw me out of $40?
I know that running a business means controlling money, but it also means not pissing on the people who help you provide the service you are selling. Furthermore if that $40 is truly that critical maybe it’s time to raise your rates so you can pay your staff so your business can grow and thrive.
Get a clue asshole.
